Calling all global citizens, globetrotters, and wanderlust-ers because this blog post will particularly be of interest to you.
Upon pondering about how vast and wonderful our world is, have you ever wondered the etymology (origin of words) of different countries? Well lucky for us, David Boyd has published an article on credit card compare with a magnificent map showing the literal translation of country names.
The article features colourful maps of each continent with original meanings of each country name. For some places, the translations are a given based on knowledge of other languages, but other places have rather peculiar meanings and can sound quite poetic (e.g., check out Spain, Botswana, Myanmar, Mexico, Uruguay).
Now some of you may want to delve deeper into the etymology and learn more about the origin of the country names. And what I love most about this article is that it actually provides detailed descriptions of the meanings in a separate source (I totally geeked out at this).
It’s so awesome to be able to acquire more knowledge about the world that surrounds us. It’s articles like these that make me appreciate the fascinating history that is present in this place we call Earth. So have a gander and be prepared to be informed, to laugh, and maybe even scratch your head a little. Click here to view the article.
